8 Trenching Safety Tips

A crucial part of any construction project is trenching and having specific trenching safety tips is important for every project. Trenching is the process of removing and digging the dirt, and on the grounds, it forms a narrow depression. However, trenching is a crucial part of every construction project.

Trenching is used in a variety of engineering and civil projects, including telephone wires and laying pipes. For construction projects, one of the crucial parts is trenching. However, the combination of trenching equipment and different methods can utilize in trenching process.

However, in the construction industry, sometimes trenching can be very dangerous and even fatal. Therefore, practicing trenching safety tips is essential for improving worksite safety. However, your team should follow some crucial trenching safety tips and the tips are:

1.      Install Protective Systems

Protective systems in the trenching keep the workers and engineers safe from deaths and cave-ins. However, trenching safety tips aim to prevent death and injury from the cave-ins. Furthermore, in preventing the cave-ins, the most general protective systems are:

a)      Sloping and Benching

For creating a slope, cutting back the trenching wall at an angle refers to sloping. Benching means steps creating for traveling up and down on the earthen wall. However, in trenching, both systems can use in conjunction with one another.

b)     Shoring

Shoring is a mechanical part or timber-made support system that helps in preventing the installation of the cave-in. However, shoring helps the earth to keep in place, and it offers protection with an extra layer. Moreover, purely it will help in preventing the collapse.

c)      Trench Shield

Trench boxes are another name of trench shields, and it is not meant for preventing the collapse or cave-in instead it aims to protect the worker. However, for continuous trenching, a great option is trench shields. Moreover, about trench shields, you should consider the following:

2.      Use Alternative Methods for Trenching

One of the crucial but dangerous construction aspects is trenching, and you should not do it more than you need. However, trenching is a hazardous method, and for this reason, you should use excavating instead of it for better safety.

Some of the alternative methods for trenching are:

a)      Directional Boring

By using the boring machine, the directional boring digs the angel on the ground without disturbing much on the surface. At first, for direction, a small pilot hole creates on the floor. Then search following the size of the pipe so that the line fits it easily. After that, you can pull the line in the middle of the hole. However, directional boring reduces most of the trenching-related dangers.

b)     Pipe Ramming

Another name of pipe ramming is pipe jacking, and for many horizontal projects, it's a standard using method. In this method, a pipe using a percussive instrument is hammered on the ground. However, this method works best with a more extensive line, and for surfaces, it may set some trouble when using the trenchless method.

c)      Utility Tunneling

Pipe jacking is similar to utility tunneling, except the worker enters the borehole and linear plates need in it. However, using a boring machine or hand, the tunneling process can be done.

However, utility tunnels are the best option for colder climates, and it is also perfect for commercial and industrial sites. Moreover, these trenching safety tips need regular inspection, repair, and maintenance.

3.      Conduct Atmospheric Testing

If the excavation or trench goes deeper more than 4 feet, it requires atmospheric testing. However, the main motto of conducting atmospheric testing is to suspect whether a hazardous atmosphere is present or not. Moreover, you should perform this testing because of oxygen deficiency's danger and dangerous gases such as methane and carbon dioxide.

4.      Beware of Falling Loads

All works should stand away from digging or lifting the equipment as it exposes the falling load's risk. However, the falling load's dangers are present in trenching; thus, the worker should avoid working under raised or suspended shipments. Moreover, the worksite equipment should store 2 feet away, at least from the trenching edge.

5.      Routinely Inspect Trenches

A competent person should daily inspect the trenching site for possible collapses or cave-ins. However, it's one of the crucial trenching safety tips, and it should do daily. Moreover, begin the inspections before the starting of the work and do it continuously throughout the shift.

Again, after natural events, such as blasting work, rainstorms, or other forms of work, inspections should happen. However, if you feel unsafe, all workers should remove from the danger zone until all the safety protections are fulfilled.

6.      Egress Points and Install Safe Access

For more than 4 feet deeper trenches, provide easy access modes to the employers and egress the canal such as ramps or ladders. However, at all times, the exits and entrances should be within the employee's 25 feet.

7.      Before Digging Locate the Utility Lines

Before conducting any digging, legally, the excavators need to contact the local utility workers. However, conduct with the local utility companies for marking their lines. It would help for trenching process because underground utilities can generate massive danger for the workers. If the workers are unaware of the digging location, they may accidentally hit an electrical, gas, sewer, water, or phone line. Ultimately such an accidental incident can cause catastrophic injury. Moreover, a dangerous gas leak can drive by the accidental striking on the gas line.

8.      Assign a Competent Person

The employer should designate a competent person who can express the trench's inspecting, designing, and supervising purpose. However, it would be better if the person became a professional engineer and he should have trained in the following:

Due to the trenching's high technical nature, proper implementation of the trenching safety tips is contingent on a competent person. However, for this reason, the skilled person should have a high level of experience and training for this trenching job.
